Ballerina Swan & The Nutcracker at the Children’s Theater

Break out the tutus and toe-shoes for Sophie the Swan’s latest adventure – Ballerina Swan & the Nutcracker!  A companion piece to the hit BALLERINA SWAN, this world premiere blends ballet and puppetry as Sophie prepares for her first holiday performance of “The Nutcracker.” A production of New York City Children’s Theater, it is based on the book “Ballerina Swan” written by Allegra Kent (former New York City Ballet Star) and illustrated by Emily Arnold McCully.

The theater is small, intimate, and charming. With only 7 rows, it is perfectly sized for pint-sized guests. There isn’t a bad seat in the house! We were sitting in one of the back rows and could see beautifully. The above picture is the actual view from our seat!

The show beautifully blends puppetry and ballet to tell the story of Sophie the Swan’s debut in “The Nutcracker” ballet. Sophie the Swan is the star of the ballet and is rehearsing with her cast, when it is announced that a new member is about to join the show. The announcement of his arrival ruffles a few feathers! The story follows along as the cast uncovers their new dance partner, and soon to be friend.

The cast was brilliant. Animated and joyful, and engaging for children! The storyline was easy to follow, and understand (so important when engaging with small children!).

The beautiful dance scenes!

Loved that audience participation was part of the presentation. The cast taught a short (and easy!) routine to the children, and then left the stage to come dance along side the mini ballerina stars in the making. What a special memory!

A wonderful show for children, and the perfect intro to ballet or theater!
