Read on to discover Superblue Miami with Kids.

Superblue Miami: What to Expect

Superblue is a walk-through experience with timed entry. The timing only applies to the entry itself, once you enter you may take as long as you wish in each of the experiences. There is a path to follow in order, and helpful staff members are stationed around the experience to help guide you and answer any questions.

Proliferating Immense Life – A story of Growth and Decay

TeamLab’s Proliferating Immense Life — A Whole Year per Year experience is the first room after you enter. It is an interactive experience based on the changing of the seasons. During the experience, projected summer flowers turn to fall foliage, which slowly changes into a barren winter scene, before blooming again for spring. When visitors touch the flowers, the petals scatter and fall away. The flowers change throughout the seasons, repeating the cycle of life and death, growth and decay.

Transcending Boundaries – Becoming part of a Landscape

This experience will take your breath away. Completely enveloping, the Transcending Boundaries experience takes place in an enormous room that portrays a seasonal landscape through wrap-around projections. Visitors can interact with this sequence by touching the walls and immersing themselves in the graphics. Over a time frame of one hour, a year’s worth of seasonal flowers blossom and scatter.
Be sure to walk within the scene. You’ll notice that if you stay still within the projections, more flowers are born. If you touch the flowers and walk around the space, the flowers scatter all at once. This grandiose room is mesmerizing and surreal. It’s one of the most popular rooms at Superblue for a reason.

Feel the Beat: Pulse Topology

Pulse Topology is a stunning immersive light installation by renowned artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. This biometric artwork consists of a sea of 3,000 suspended light bulbs, each of which glimmers to the heartbeat of visitors. Sensors located inside the experience detect and record new heartbeats, which then replace the oldest ones, creating a poetic choir of human rhythm, and the ultimate connection between visitors. Our suggestion: lay down on a chair and take in the rhythmic beat.

Dissolving into Space: James Turrell: Ganzfeld

Next in the experience is James Turrell’s Ganzfeld. This amazing installation work examines the effects of light and space on the mechanics of vision as well as conscious and unconscious modes of sight. The large-scale installation immerses visitors in a room of monochrome lighting, in which the dimensions of space completely dissolve. This is a fun exercise for in-depth perception and a great learning experience for kids. Good to know: Photography is forbidden in this room, to allow the visitor to be fully immersed in the color sensation. Head-ups: the thick color haze could be disorientating, be sure to hold little one’s hands through the experience.

Superblue Miami: Forest of Us

Artist Es Devlin’s “Forest of Us” exhibition is an immersive environment that takes visitors on a journey into the human respiratory process. Visitors enter the installation by watching a short video depicting the mathematics of human respiration and the geometry of trees and then enter a massive mirrored maze that was inspired by the shape of bronchial structures. Navigating the maze’s pathways is an epic experience, and was a highlight of our visit.

On Cloud 9: Massless Clouds between Sculpture and Life

Known famously as the “cloud room,” this incredibly immersive experience mimics what it would feel like to walk through a bubbly cloud. Similar to that of an artistic foam party, visitors don ponchos for the experience (included with a ticket) and navigate the euphoric haze. Good to know: the bubble mixture is non-toxic, but ingesting it is still not advisable (be sure to tell the kids). There is a small upcharge for the experience, and it is completely worth it. When else can you walk through a cloud? Don’t miss this.

Superblue Miami with Kids: Tips for Visiting

Supeblue is highly immersive and engaging, and a perfect experience for all ages. Children under 3 years old are complimentary with a paid adult admission. Strollers are allowed throughout the exhibit. Good to know: Two of the rooms require visitors to wear elasticized shoe covers. The shoe covers are “One Size Fits All.” While big, the shoe covers worked fine even for children’s feet. One of the exhibits, Ganzfeld, doesn’t allow for photography. The room becomes a bit disorienting due to the haze of color, be mindful of small children. The Forest of Us experience has a small water feature (only a few inches deep). There are staff members who watch this area closely, but be sure to keep an eye on little ones so they don’t splash or create a scene.

  • Time Needed for Visit: Varies greatly! Suggest allocating at least 1 hour – we were there for over 2 1/2 hours when we visited (there’s no limit of time to stay inside).
  • Crowd tip: As with anything, weekends are the busiest. The least busy times are weekday afternoons. We visited on a Friday at 2:30 pm and had the experience largely to ourselves.
  • Photography: Is fine (and encouraged!) in all installations, except for Ganzfeld.
  • Hungry? During peak times, Miami’s best food trucks park in front of Superblue. The rotating lineup includes Jealous Fork, The Caribe Vegan, and others. Grab some food and sit at the artist Yinka Ilori’s gorgeous mural installation at the front of the building.
