Looking for a ‘wheelie’ good view while visiting London? Look no further than the famous London Eye. An amazing feat of engineering, the London Eye offers jaw-dropping views over the city; towering over the Thames river, opposite the Houses of Parliament, offering unobstructed visibility in all directions. It is an experience that will leave you breathless.
There is no question that a visit to the London Eye was at the top of our must-do list during our recent visit. Read on as we give you a step-by-step look at what to expect during your visit.
Behind the Eye – History of the World’s most famous Ferris Wheel
The London Eye opened in 2000 and was designed by the husband-and-wife team of Julia Barfield and David Marks of Marks Barfield Architects. At the time it was built, it was the tallest giant wheel in the world, and at present, it is Europe’s tallest Ferris wheel. The wheel was only intended to be in London for 5 years. However, it became beloved by visitors and locals alike who wanted to make it a permanent attraction. The London Eye put in an application to the city council to become permanent and the wish was granted in July 2002.
Boarding Time – Tickets and Boarding the London Eye
As with all major attractions, we recommend visiting during a quieter hour. Right at the opening is a great time to visit the London Eye. Peak periods – such as weekends and school holidays – often sell out in advance, and even those with tickets may experience longer than usual wait times. Good to know: upgrading your tickets to Fast Track means no lines (and no waiting time!).
The boarding process is quite easy. As the capsule approaches the doors will open, and a London Eye team member will help guide guests safely on board. The capsule is moving while you enter – but it’s at such a slow pace it is completely safe.
Cool Capsules – Riding the London Eye
Just what are these futuristic baubles that people are riding in? The London Eye is comprised of 32 enclosed capsules, each holding up to 28 people. The capsules have central air systems, speaker systems, and a bench in the middle of each of them. Most importantly – each capsule offers remarkable views of London in every direction.
A Full Rotation – Views from the Sky
One complete rotation takes approximately 30 minutes. visitors are rewarded with views of up to 40 kilometers on a clear day – across the capital and the south of England. The view from the capsules is nothing short of magical. Bring your camera! Some of our favorite angels below:
While we adored the scenery and incredible views across London, there is something to be said about the mechanics of the London Eye as well. We found it interesting to watch how the Eye revolved in a smooth pattern and seamlessly dangled these capsules high above London. Be sure to move your gaze away from the skyline for a few minutes to take in the architectural marvel in motion.
After your Visit – The London Eye with Kids
Make a day of it! The London Eye is conveniently located within easy walking distance to Westminster Bridge, Big Ben, and the Houses of Parliament. The London Eye is also near the Sea Life London Aquarium, The London Dungeon, and Shrek’s Adventure – which is an immersive experience through the land of the famous Ogre. Kids need a break? One of London’s only carousels, known as the Golden Carousel, is a few steps away.
Night Vision – London Eye at Night
Rather see twinkling lights at night? The capsules illuminate a gorgeous shade of pink after sunset – making it a fun photo op to see the eye from the water’s edge.
