Top 10 Washington DC Activities for Families

1. Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln Memorial is an American national monument built to honor the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. It is located on the western end of the National Mall, across from the Washington Monument.  The building itself is visually impressive. The building itself is HUGE – is 190 feet long and 119 feet wide, towering to a height of almost 100 feet. There are 36 columns, each one representing one state in the U.S. at the time of President Lincoln’s death. The 9-foot tall, 175-ton statue of President Lincoln looks out over the National Mall of the country that he fought to unite.  Seeing this memorial up close and personal is an awe inspiring experience. Tip: Bring along a penny for a little kiddie learning lesson, the image of the memorial is on the back.

2. Museum Hop

Smithsonian’s the name and museum hopping should be your game… because in Washington DC, the museums are totally and COMPLETELY FREE. There are over 19 museums and galleries to choose from, and ALL are terrific and will definitely have something that will be of interest for all members of the family. Our favorites: The National Museum of Natural History for its dino-rific exhibits and awesome theater (it is the most visited museum in the world for good reason!). the National Museum of American History for Abe Lincoln’s hat, Dorthy’s ruby red slippers, and the National Air and Space Museum for walk through airplanes and simulators which will have all kids taking to the air. Tip: As the museums are free sometimes lines become long to get through security – however they do move fast.

3. Library of Congress

DO NOT MISS The Library of Congress during your visit. The national library of the United States and the largest library in the world is housed in an absolutely gorgeous building. They offer free tours (including ones specifically for families) or you can opt to wander and take a self guided tour as well. The central reading room itself is spectacular, be sure to walk around the exterior for picturesque views of the capital from the windows and to see each of the incredible hallways. Check the calendar as the children’s library often has free events and activities. Tip – There is a “secret” tunnel connecting the Library of Congress to the U.S. Capitol so it is very easy to visit both in the same day.

4. National Mall

The National Mall is America’s backyard, and the country’s most-visited national park. The park connects most of the museums in DC, and features many monuments and memorials that honor American forefathers and heroes who serviced this country. The Mall also acts as a “national stage” of sorts, where movements and celebrations take place, where people gather to have their voices heard. If weather permits, it is a gorgeous green space for picnicking, and reflecting. Tip: There is a small carousel in the National Mall near the castle, making it a great stop for kids.

5. Renwick Gallery

Have a little art lover? There is no better place to discover amazing art then the Renwick Gallery. Part of the Smithsonian institutions, it was commissioned in 1861 by a Washington banker and philanthropist as an art gallery for his private collection of paintings and sculpture.  It is housed in a National Historic Landmark building that was initially constructed in 1859 on Pennsylvania Avenue and originally housed the Corcoran Gallery of Art .When it was built in 1859, it was known as “the American Louvre.” Only a few steps away from the White House, today it holds an ever-changing array of INCREDIBLE contemporary art exhibits and is a must visit. The current exhibit: Art of the Burning Man (thru Jan 2019) will blow you away. Tip: The building has an elevator (great for strollers!) and ample bathrooms.

6. The White House

Would a trip to Washington DC be complete without a visit to the White House? The White House is the official residence as well as the workplace of the President of the United States. It is located at the famous address of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and has been the residence of every U.S. President since John Adams in 1800. The White House (of course) is heavily guarded and a visit today means only a walk up to a series of gates. Tip: Good trip planners can write to their congressmen and request (free) tour tickets to actually ENTER the White House itself. Do so as far in advance as possible – instructions and more information HERE.

7. White House Gift Shop

Don’t fret if you can’t get tickets for a White House Visit! We know a little secret. Head over to the White House Gift Shop for your souvenir shopping. A purchase of $25 or more allows a FREE keepsake photo in their mock oval office or presidential podium. (Photos can also be purchased separately for a small fee.) The pictures are worth every penny. More information HERE.

8. National Portrait Gallery

Immerse yourself into some real Facetime at the National Portrait Gallery. Bring the kids to see the incredible portraits of the past presidents, first ladies, leaders, rebels, and other prominent personalities. This is also where you will find the famous Obama portrait. Be sure to head up to the top floor which holds some contemporary works, including the current neon America piece above. Don’t miss the Kogod Courtyard and Café, a gorgeous enclosed area that offers stunning vantages of the building and incredible grid-patterned ceiling. Tip: Check the schedule before going! The courtyard hosts frequent (and free!) jazz sessions on weekends, as well as crafting for kids. It’s a wonderful place to spend a few hours after checking out the portraits.

9. Paddle Around the Basin

Make “monumental” memories with the family on the water by renting a paddle boat! One of our favorite activities during our visit was paddling around the Cherry Blossom Festival via the Tidal Basin.  Paddle Boats are available in 2 or 4 person boat rentals starting at $18.00 an hour, which includes the use of their life jackets. The company also rents swan shaped paddle boats; however, there are only a few of them and they cannot run in wind (as the tall shape of the boat catches wind and easily tips over). Reservations, while not essential, are highly recommended if you would like to avoid a long line during peak bloom season. More information and to make a reservation HERE.

10. Love Art Wall

Did your family LOVE your visit to Washington DC? Head on over to the under-the radar Blagden Alley to see the rainbow mural by  visual artist Lisa Marie Thalhammer  to proclaim your love for the city. Her fun, vibrant mural spells L-O-V-E over four painted garage doors, and is a perfect family photo opp. Sure LOVE is all you need, but you also may be getting thirsty? Tip: After the mural head over to neighboring Calico for a thirst quencher. Turn the tables on the kids – at Calico they are famous for their ADULT juice boxes (with alcohol). Adults can have juice boxes once in a while too right?

Bonus Restaurant Rec: Cylde’s Restaurant

Clyde’s of Georgetown is one of those perfect family friendly restaurants that doesn’t feel family friendly. The gorgeous, well appointed interior has brass railings and old school charm of yesteryear when dining out was a special occasion. The bustling restaurant has an equal numbers of tourists and locals (always a good sign) and the food is seriously delicious. There is a children’s menu – but I loved that it offered REAL food (above the hotdogs – think Salmon filet with a side of marinated veggies) as well as fun items to peak any child’s interest (gourmet mac and cheese with goldfish sprinkled on top!). Known for their crab cakes, a large wine list and craft beer selection – Cylde’s is one that will satisfy kids as well as mom and dad. Reservations are essential, make them HERE.
