The Kindness Rocks Project – Sharing Kindness with Ferdinand

Couldn’t the world use a little more kindness? One thing we can do as parents is to help instill kindness in our kids.  Teaching little ones how to spread kindness on their own is just one way to bring a little happiness into our world.  A gesture that has no boundaries, appropriate for any occasion, and it can appreciated by all ages, kindness is a movement for everyone.

One of our favorite recent initiatives is The Kindness Rocks Project. The fun project helps spread kindness through sweet thoughts and sentiments painted on rocks and left for strangers to find, and uplift their day when they least expect it.

Sometimes the world gives us a small sign of encouragement, right when we need it the most. That’s the idea behind The Kindness Rocks Project, a pay-it-forward service project in hopes of sparking joy in people’s everyday lives.

Sharing Kindness with Ferdinand

When asked by Fox Home Entertainment and the The Kindness Project to help spread kindness just as Ferdinand did, we charged at the opportunity.  How could you not want to spread kindness through our community?

One of our favorite family films of last year, Ferdinand is also about sharing kindness with those around you.  Ferdinand is a giant bull with a big heart, who prefers flowers and friendliness to fighting. After being mistaken for a dangerous beast and taken from his home, he finds a misfit team of amazing friends for the adventurous return home to his family again. The perfect story, and most lovable character, Ferdinand proves you can’t judge a bull by its cover!

Taking the positive messages from the film, we shared Kindness with Ferdinand with Kindness Rocks to help spread kindness to our community, and it was so easy!

The Kindness Rocks Project

Sharing Kindness with Ferdinand – Here’s what you need to get started:

  • Rocks with smooth or flat surfaces
  • Non-Toxic Acrylic Paints in bright colors
  • Disposable plates or cups for the paint
  • Sharpie Markers
  • Paint Brushes
  • Non-Toxic Mod Podge (acrylic spray works as well)
  • Plastic table cloth, newspaper, or similar

Directions:

1. Paint your Rock. Acrylic paint works best. We recommend 2+ layers for bright bold color. Wait for the paint to dry before painting the opposite side.

2. Decorate the Rock. Create a design on the surface of the painted rock. Your imagination is your only limitation! We used Sharpie markers, as they adhere well to the paint.  We wrote kind words and decorated them with hearts.

3. Seal the Rock. Once the paint is dry, cover the painted rock with a sealant, such as ModgePodge. This will protect the rocks from rain and weather. Once the sealant is dry, your rock is complete!

4. Spread Kindness. Leave your inspirational messages at local parks, playgrounds, and libraries  anywhere to help uplift and change someone’s mood. We chose a popular walking path in a nearby park for our kindness project!

5. Share your experience! Ask your family and firends to join in the movement! Follow others who are sharing kindness with Ferdinand, by tagging #TheKindnessRocksProect, #FerdinandRocksHE #MakeitwithMichaels on Social media for more inspiration!
