Mother’s Day – New York Botanical Garden

What better way to celebrate Mother’s Day then immersing yourself in acres of beautiful flowers?

The weather – perfect. The Lil Kid – in a good mood. As such, The Mommy – happy.
Even more…The Cherry Blossoms – in full force and made for quite a picture-esque opportunity.

The New York Botanical Garden is about a 45 minute drive from midtown Manhattan. While technically within NYC limits, this short drive brings you to a world away from the city.

And this world is spectacular.

Spectacularly big. Of course, anything feels big after raising a child in 700 square feet! But with 250 acres of gardens for you to roam freely, this felt worldly and a bit overwhelming. With knowing it was too much ground to cover in an afternoon, we set our sights on tackling a few areas – specifically the Children’s Adventure Garden, The Rock Garden, and Daffodil Hill.

The children’s area (as one would expect by name) is amazing for kiddies; including a small maze, a huge chalk drawing area, and nature based learning activity stops scattered along the walking path. On the day we visited they also had tables set up where kiddies could plant and bring home their own wheat grass to grow. Amongst the diversions and activities included the cutest puppet theater I’ve ever seen. Lil Kid was in heaven.

The Rock garden was beautiful and chosen on our itinerary simply because it was advertised to have a small waterfall. As Lil Kid is so uber-obsessed with water lately that I think he may grow fins soon, this was the obvious choice for our fam. The Rock Garden was amazing, and the – albieght small – water fall did not disappoint.

For Mothers Day they also had food trucks and (more importantly) beer and wine vendors on Daffodil Hill. In addition to the eating and drinking til mommy’s heart was content, Daffodil Hill also had live music and games for the kids. Many a family including mine brought picnic blankets and enjoyed the festivities.

photo1Was such an amazing day. Flowers, trees, and grass (a big deal to a city kid!) a plenty – with fragrant blooms and beautiful colorations everywhere. Such a perfect way to spend Mother’s Day. So perfect that we are already planning to go back next year.
