There are so many wonderful events during Halloween, but one event we continue to recommend year after year is The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze. Located at the historic Van Cortlandt Manor in New York’s Croton-on-Hudson, the annual Halloween extravaganza showcases over 7,000 (!) meticulously hand-carved jack o’lanterns on an elaborate walk-through light trail experience. Complete with an all-original soundtrack, synchronized lighting, and special effects— it’s the most GOURD-geous display in New York and a spectacle you must see to believe.

Celebrating 21 Years of The Blaze
The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze began in 2005 as a small, creative fundraiser by Historic Hudson Valley, the nonprofit organization that preserves and celebrates the region’s cultural heritage. What started as a modest local display at Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton-on-Hudson has since grown into one of the most spectacular Halloween events in the country, attracting more than 2 million visitors since it’s opening. The event showcases over 7,000 hand-carved jack o’lanterns, all individually designed and lit by local artists and volunteers, arranged into massive glowing sculptures that range from historic landmarks to pop culture icons. Blending art, history, and community spirit, the Blaze has become a beloved fall tradition that captures the creativity and magic of the Hudson Valley..

Scare Factor – The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze
The Blaze only takes place at night allowing the dark night sky to set the scene for the illuminated pumpkins. While it is dark through the winding paths of the exhibit, the overall experience is not considered too spooky. The paths are lit, and enough light is omitted from the pumpkins to keep children from being frightened. The experience is of flickering pumpkins only—no scare tactics or haunted house antics on the grounds. In the earlier hours of the night, the attendance is mostly that of families and children.

New for 2025: The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze
The 2025 Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze is lighting up Van Cortlandt Manor with bold new pumpkin displays that take the trail to enchanting new heights. Wander through an emerald-hued Wizard of Oz dreamscape, marvel at a circus “big top” crafted entirely of jack o’lanterns, and discover game-inspired pumpkins paying tribute to classic arcade and video game icons. You’ll also spot carved versions of New York State landmarks dotted throughout the path, plus a new finale display that turns the manor into a circus theme – complete with the pumpkin carousel (yes, it spins!).
A highlight for 2025 is the return (and expansion) of the Gourd & Goblet Tavern—a seated VIP experience housed in an 18th-century inn along the trail, where guests can relax with snacks, drinks, and atmospheric charm. The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze+2Historic Hudson Valley+2 Also new is the Headless Horseman’s Hideaway, a trail-side stop offering themed sips, snacks, photo-ops, and surprise visits from the Horseman himself—perfect for adding spooky fun without full spook factor. Both experiences require a special “Blaze and Tavern Combo Ticket”, and needs to be booked in advance.

Pumpkin Display Highlights Not to Miss
Step into a star-lit pumpkin galaxy at Pumpkin Planetarium, a dazzling tunnel with an arched ceiling made entirely of glowing jack o’ lanterns. This celestial wonder isn’t just a corridor of pumpkins — it’s a full-on synchronized light show that bathes the night in cosmic orange hues, giving each carved creation an otherworldly glow. It’s truly a sight to behold and one of the most magical photo ops at The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze.
Another fan favorite is the prehistoric pumpkin menagerie — life-size dinosaurs carved from pumpkin form roam under the moonlit sky, turning the walk into a Jurassic spectacle. And then there’s the majestic Statue of Liberty, recreated entirely from pumpkins, its torch and crown glowing among the autumn night with a sense of grandeur. Rounding out the classics is the nostalgic Circus Train, with pumpkin-crafted carriages chugging along in sculptural form, bringing that whimsical carnival energy to the trail.

Tips for your visit
• The Great Jack O’ Lantern Blaze is held rain or shine, and is completely outdoors (with the exception of the check-in area and food tents). Be sure to dress the little ones in their autumn weather best!
• Hungry? Fall-themed food selections are available in the visitor tent—think soup, chili, donuts, pumpkin pie and cider. Wine and Beer is also available. Our tip: grab a beverage before you hit the trail, and carry it with you as you enjoy the pumpkins.
• The main path around The Blaze is stroller accessible, but it is not ideal for wheels. The path is a bit difficult to navigate in the dark, and it can get muddy depending on weather. Best to leave the stroller at home, if possible.
• Restrooms are near the main visitor tent, and are portable toilets only—plan accordingly!
• The Blaze Gift Shop is filled with merchandise and toys (including fun flashing toys that light up the night). Warning: you need to enter and exit the event through the gift shop.
• Parking is plentiful and FREE!
