You have never experienced the railroad like this before! Rail Explorers puts visitors on the rails and into the driver’s seat – controlling AMAZING pedal-powered bicycles that explore railways. These epic tracks bring you under a canopy of lush forest and trees, alongside a rushing river, and beside blooming wildflowers – all from a comfy bike seat. It’s an immersive tour like no other, and it’s the perfect activity for families as the rail cars are suitable for children (and even furry four-legged family members can ride as well!).
The best part – these nature tours take place outside in open nature, and are the perfect activity during these times of covid. We absolutely fell in love with this fun activity – it is an epic experience that everyone MUST put on their bucket list. Read on to discover the best way to adventure in the Catskills!
How does it work?
Rail Explorers only operate on rails that do not have any train traffic. The staff works closely with the railroad managers and dispatchers to ensure that there are no other vehicles on the rails during our operations. Rail Explorers has operations currently in the Catskills, Rhode Island, and Las Vegas! We visited the Catskill location for our experience, which allowed us to experience the magic of the historic Ulster & Delaware Railroad.
An Experience for all Ages
Everyone can ride Rail Explorers! Friends, families, children of all ages, and even four-legged friends. For safety, all riders must be secured in their own seat. The only exception is infants, who must be secured in a chest harness to an adult rider. Infants in a chest harness travel free. Children must be accompanied by a rider at least 16 years old to operate the brakes. Younger children may not be able to reach the pedals but can be safely buckled in to enjoy the ride.
All Aboard!!
Tickets can be bought online and often sell out way in advance – be sure to book ahead! There are two bike options for riders to choose from. The Tandem Explorer allows two riders at a time to take on the tracks. These explorers cost $42.50 a person, totaling $85 to fill the bike. The Quad Explorer, otherwise known as the “Cadillac” of their bikes, holds up to 4 riders. This explorer costs $37.50 a person, adding up to $150 for the entire bike. All riders will need to be strapped in the seat belt for safety. Connecting railbikes together for groups larger than four is possible – which is a great option for larger families with 4+ children, extended families, or small group outings.
The River Run
The Catskill Experience allows you to experience the magic of the historic Ulster & Delaware Railroad as you travel alongside Esopus Creek through the beautiful woods of the Catskill Mountains. The track is an 8-mile round trip and takes about 2.5 hours. The bikes used on the River Run offer pedal assistance, which means they have electric assistance to help you pedal the bike. There is one break halfway where the staff turns around the rail cars to return to the station.
This turnaround spot is creekside and GORGEOUS. Be sure to bring a snack and your camera. The turnaround procedure itself is an epic experience that involves cool hydraulics. Watching these cars turn around was our son’s favorite – he still talks about it. Hint: The staff allows children to help with the turnaround – be sure to stick around.
Safety in times of Covid
In the times of Coronavirus, Rail Explorers is the perfect social distancing activity. Aside from how the tour is naturally distanced, the team at Rail Explorers has taken extra precautions to keep everyone safe and healthy. All rail cars now have a ‘rolling’ departure. Each group boards the rail bikes and departs the station in 3-5 minute intervals.
Railbikes are thoroughly disinfected and cleaned between tours. During our visit, we saw the staff wipe down the equipment multiple times and felt safe the entire time through the procedures.
Tips for your Visit:
- Rain or Shine – Rail Explorers is rain or shine – be sure to check the weather and be prepared for conditions!
- Umbrellas – Umbrellas are provided and included on each rail car in case of rain.
- What to Wear – Comfortable/loose-fitting clothes you would wear for hiking/biking is best. Be sure to bring a rain jacket for wet weather. Closed-toe shoes are recommended.
- Bags and Carry-ons – Each rail explorer has a small basket for backpacks, purses, cameras, water bottles, and belongings. Keep all large items in the car.
- What to Bring – Sunscreen, a hat, and water are recommended – it can be hot out on the rails!
- Cameras– Cameras are encouraged! Part of the magic of riding the rails is that the experience is ‘hands-free’ – you don’t have to steer! Selfie sticks and GoPros are allowed (we brought ours and are glad that we did!) just be sure to practice caution when the Rail Explorer is in motion.
- Four-legged Friends – Dogs are permitted but will need to be restrained with a leash or harness (don’t want them to jump from the bike!). Owners will need to be cautious – the space is limited and dogs will need to be careful so they are not pinched by the pedals/chains.
- Bathrooms – Bathrooms are located in an air-conditioned car on site.
- After the Experience – Rail Explores has a small gift shop on site that offers various items and fun memorabilia from your visit (they also sell water bottles if needed!).
- Make a Day of It – Grab a bite to eat at the famous (and delicious!) Phoenicia Diner after your visit – located just down the road from Rail Explorers. The Diner is known for their amazing food and during these times of covid, they offer ample (shaded!) outdoor dining options.
