Tiptoeing through the Tulips at FAM Flower Farm, a gorgeous farm in the flowerbulb region – next to Keukenhof in Lisse Holland. An amazing opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of Holland’s famous fields, and to learn more about the flower bulbs and growing process directly from the farmers.

It has been a life-long dream to visit the countryside of Holland, and to take in the beauty of the famous flower fields in person. Do you have visions of tulip fields dancing in your head? Read on to learn more about this petal perfect experience – and how you can also wander through the stunning flowering fields during your visit.

Respecting the Fields

When researching the flower fields to visit during our trip – we quickly realized that most fields are completely closed to the public. Not only do they not allow entry, they are either now blocked or fenced off completely to traffic. Trespassing on the fields has become a major problem in Holland. Colourful tulip fields throughout the Netherlands are popular destinations for visitors, but the rise of the selfie in recent years has resulted in damage as people enter and walk across the fields. Because of this, the Dutch tourist board and local growers launched a campaign reminding selfie-takers to respect the flowers and to not enter the fields during their travels.

In researching farms further,  we came across the gorgeous fields of FAM flower Farm on Instagram. We were ecstatic to learn that the farm allowed visitors access into their amazing fields by making an appointment through their website. They are one of the only farms to offer this unique experience.

The location of the fields couldn’t be more perfect! FAM Flower Farm is located quite close to the wildly popular Keukenhof park in Lisse – making it possible to visit both in the same day (which is exactly what we did! Read more on our visit to Keukenhof HERE).

Behind the Farm

We were delighted to meet Marlies and Linda, who are the lovely duo behind FAM Flower Farm, during our visit. Marlies and Linda have been friends since they were 12 years old in middle school. Marlies married Hubert, a dahlia grower and Linda married Henk, a tulip and daffodil grower. FAM Flower Farm is the creation of their two families! They own multiple fields across the area, some of which have been in the family for over 200 years.

The Power of Social Media

Marlies and Linda started brainstorming on how they could connect better with their customers, and share their farms with the world. Thanks to social media it became possible for Marlies and Linda to tell their story and share their fields and beautiful flowers with other flower fans, and to have direct contact with their customers. Their popular Instagram account has grown tremendously, and is a must follow – the images are stunning! Not only does the account share their colorful moments with you – they give many tips and tricks on how you can plant tulip and dahlia bulbs and grow your own garden at home.

Captivated by photography and the desire to meet flower lovers  – Marlies and Linda also started allowing for private visiting sessions through the fields. Perfect for family photoshoots, engagement pics, and nature enthusiasts – these private experiences allow you to respectfully enter the fields, and take in the wonder of pristine Dutch flowers at your own pace. A brilliant idea and a wonderful way to immerse yourself in vibrant spring color.

Flowering Fields Forever -Entering the Fields

Seeing these vibrant rows of coloeful blooms in real life was incredible. The prestine rows of color, endless blooms, and gorgeous dutch landscape was indescribable. It’s an experience that must be on your must-do list.

Not just rows of flowers – Marlies and Linda welcome guests with amazing hospitality – with coffee and Dutch waffles (stroopwafels) at a table set up directly adjacent to the field. They also sit with their guests and explain how flower bulbs grow and how the flowering process works. After coffee and a chat, guests are then given time to create the most beautiful pictures in our field. There are also various fun accessories and props available to use such as baskets, watering cans, clogs etc… Per visit they allow a maximum of 12-15 people so you can take photos quietly.

Visiting the Farm

Mother Nature decides every year when the flowers will bloom exactly, however here is a general gauge of the annual flower bloom:

  • The dahlias normally bloom from mid-August to the beginning of September.
  • The daffodils normally bloom from the end of March until the end of April.
  • The tulips normally bloom from mid-April to beginning of May.

It is important to note – flower field visits are available by reservation only. See the latest availability here. Entering the farm’s fields cost 40 euro. Price is per person including coffee, waffles and a bunch of tulips. Kids under 4 years old are free, kids between 4-12 yrs old are 20 euro.

Can’t make it to the farm? Grow your own at home! FAM Flower farm is known for their quality bulbs, which they can ship directly to addresses across the globe. You can pre-order the tulip bulbs now, which will be delivered in October (when it is the optimal time to plant them).  More than just tulips – FAM flower farm also offers other flowers – check the website for the full listing.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Depending on the weather, the fields could become muddy – be sure to leave your heels at home!
  • There is no bathroom (or any interior space) on the field. You will be completely outdoors for the experience.
  • Chidlren are welcomed on the fields! But of course caution needs to be practiced with small children so they do not damage the flowers.
