Tree Time with the Family – Staying at The Mohicans Treehouse Resort with Kids

Remember when you were a kid, and you dreamed of the perfect treehouse to stay overnight in? Now you can now make that dream a reality (bonus: this one is complete with running water, heat, and air conditioning!). Welcome to the Mohicans. Located in Loudonville, Ohio, The Mohicans is a magical nature oasis, straight from a fairytale – this family-owned and operated business features state-of-the-art tree houses. The best part? Several treehouses are great for families!  Read on as we explore Staying at The Mohicans Treehouse Resort with Kids.

Behind the Trees – The Mohicans

The Mohicans Treehouse Resort is set on 77 acres in the heart of Ohio’s Mohican Valley. The resort is owned by husband and wife team Kevin and Laura Mooney, who took a leap of faith in 2005 and purchased the wooded acreage. They started by building cabins, but after reading a book on tree houses, they were inspired! The couple shifted their focus to treehouses to create this magical oasis. Since they have collaborated with Pete Nelson, the host of the hit show Treehouse Masters. One of the treehouses on the property, Old Pine, was featured on Discovery Channel’s series “Treehouse Masters” and was designed by Pete himself.

Today, the family business has become one of the most unique destinations in the world. The Mohicans property includes nine unique treehouses, four large cabins, and a stunning wedding venue and complex, which has become one of the most sought-after wedding destinations in the Midwest.

Treehouses – The Mohicans

Each of the property’s nine treehouses are unique – and they vary in size and amenities. Some treehouses are designed for two and are great for a romantic retreat; others can fit up to four guests and are perfect for families. Each is private and situated separately from the others. These luxury tree top experiences are just like a small apartment – they have everything you need, including electricity, heat, and air conditioning.

El Castillo Treehouse – The Mohicans

We stayed in El Castillo Treehouse, which is a gorgeous two-story retreat. It offers two floors and two beds: one queen-sized murphy bed in the living area and a king-sized bed on the second floor. The name “El Castillo” translates to The Castle, and after seeing the second-floor bedroom, you will understand why. This floor features a spectacular vaulted ceiling and chandelier, a king-sized bed (perfect for any king or queen!), and a small terrace. All beds have luxury linens, and blankets are also provided.

The kitchenette had a sink, a small refrigerator, a coffee maker, a double stove-top burner, and a microwave. The kitchen is thoughtfully appointed with a few pots and pans, dishes (and dish soap), coffee cups, and wine glasses. Everything we needed, including a cookbook to inspire an evening meal.

El Castillo has a full bathroom and an additional outdoor shower. Shampoo, conditioner, and soap are provided in the bathroom, along with towels.

The first-floor living room offers a small couch and folding chairs and a terrace with a seating area, a table for four, a small TV, and a DVD player. Small but mighty, it is the perfect space for a family and has everything we need for a relaxing stay.

Outside, guests will find that each Treehouse has a grill, fire pit, and a (super fun!) swing. Firewood is provided, and there was a picnic table and several chairs for seating. We spent most of our time outside, enjoying family time around a bonfire with s’mores, and enjoying the natural surroundings. There is also a pond on the property, which is fun to walk to and explore. Watch our vido of the treehouse here.

Visiting the Treehouses – Tips for your Visit & What to Pack

As you will need to climb a few stairs to reach the treehouse, try to avoid large suitcases or heavy luggage. Each treehouse offers a small TV along with DVDs. There isn’t satellite/cable/digital service, be sure to pack DVDs (or download shows to an iPad/similar) if you want to watch a movie. There is a small refrigerator, but those who plan on lots of cooking may find the need for a second cooler/ice to store food and beverages.

Aside from clothing/typical traveling items, we suggest packing:

  • Charcoal and wood kindling/fire starter for the fire
  • Items for s’mores
  • DVDs
  • Books (a treehouse is an ultimate place to read!)
  • Deck of cards/board games
  • Flashlight/batteries
  • Blowdryer
  • Bug spray and Sunscreen
  • Groceries for your stay
  • Aluminum foil, Ziploc bags, paper towels (as needed)

A (nicely stocked) grocery store about 20 minutes away has everything listed above, including wine/beer and bonfire needs.

Good to Know

The Mohicans are meant to offer a remote private getaway for time to connect to the outdoors. There isn’t a lobby, elevator, or common area. Check-in is entirely digital, contactless, and straightforward. Cell Phone service is limited in some areas of the property. There is no internet/wifi available. Have a four-legged friend? Pets are permitted at some cabins and treehouses.

Special Occasions

The Mohicans Treehouse Resort is ideal for weddings or corporate retreats. There is a (gorgeous) two-story venue on the property where these events are held. The weddings here are breathtaking and an absolute dream. Check out the videos here.
