There’s no need to travel to the Vatican to see Michelangelo’s ceiling of the Sistine Chapel — because you can now see the incredible art marvel right here in NYC. The breathtaking “Up Close: Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel” allows viewers to get face-to-face with Michelangelo’s ceiling frescoes from the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel, reproduced and artfully displayed in near original size.
The exhibit displays 34 reproductions in the immersive, stunning environment of the Oculus at Westfield World Trade Center. This innovative presentation of world-renowned pieces like “The Creation of Adam” and “The Last Judgement” brings audiences up close to the artwork; a perfect experience for those who would want a closer look, or those who haven’t made the trip, but want to experience the wonder of these masterpieces.
- Exploring Up Close: Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel
“Up Close: Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel” is a traveling exhibit. The New York leg of the exhibit runs from June 23 through July 23 in the Oculus at Westfield World Trade Center. The exhibit will run for a month before a six-week exhibit at Garden State Plaza in Paramus, N.J., from Sept. 1 to Oct. 15. After, the display will move to six other locations: Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, Chicago and Annapolis. Tickets for the New York exhibit, as well as the additional locations, start at $15.
Many of the paintings can be seen by commuters from the upper floors of the transit hub, but the real beauty of this exhibit has to be realized up close and in person.
The near original size frescoes, when experienced at eye-level, are breathtaking.
The overwhelming dimensions of the art, the closeness to the picture, and the modern style of the exhibit allows the visitors to explore the artwork up close, a distance impossible to achieve in the Sistine Chapel.
The Last Judgement
The centerpiece of the show is a replica of the iconic painter’s “The Last Judgment.” The impressive 40′ x 40′ fresco depicts the original that over takes the entire altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City.
Hands down, an incredible exhibit.
