Wicked the Musical – For Kids

WICKED the musical is generally recommended for children aged 8 and above. Children under the age of 5 are not permitted in the theatre. The Land of Oz depicted in WICKED offers a unique perspective on the original “Wizard of Oz” tale. This complex storyline makes it more suitable for older children who can better understand and appreciate the narrative.

WICKED does not have bad language, stark violence, or overt sexual activity. There are some dark and scary moments that could frighten smaller children, such as the powerful Oz head, or the flying monkeys. The “melting” scene has a new take and is behind a curtain. The show lasts 2 hours and 45 minutes with an intermission and may be too long for restless smaller children. But of course, every child is different! Ultimately, it’s up to the parents or guardians to determine if their child is ready for the show.

We suggest that parents research the show first with the child by watching the musical trailer, or short video online. As so much of the story in musicals is told through the lyrics, it’s also good to listen to the soundtrack together first. Not only will this gauge interest, but when/if they do see the show they will be familiar with the lyrics which will help them enjoy the show even more.
